Gorgeous Hair Starts in the Bathroom

If you have ever watched the TV series Seinfeld, you might recall an episode where the main characters all suffered flat, unappealing hair because their condo buildings changed shower kits to save on water.  It was funny watching it, but that was a sitcom.  In real life, having a bad hair day is not much fun.  I may run the risk of sounding shallow, but truth be told, hair is one of the most important element of a person’s appearance.  After all, it isn’t called a crowning glory for nothing.  Hair provides revealing clues on a person’s taste, social status and self-care.

Each person spends a certain amount of time in front of the mirror every morning.  A significant portion of this time is spent grooming and styling your hair.  Unknown to most, however, the key to having a good hair day starts from the moment you take your morning shower.

First, learn from Seinfeld and purchase a good shower kit.  If you are totally clueless plumbing-wise, check out layman-friendly sites such as Plumbing Point to get some very useful tips on choosing, installing and maintaining a good set.  Shower kits will make it that much easier to wash your hair properly; there are actually some shampoo tips that you just cannot do properly without one.

Once you have the right shower kit, follow the following guidelines in washing your hair.  Before anything else, comb your hair out using a wide-toothed brush to get out any tangles.  Hair gets weak and fragile when wet and tangles are apt to break off.  Brushing before showering will also loosen the oil residue on your scalp, making it easier to wash off.  While your scalp naturally secretes oil to keep hair soft and moisturized, too much oil weights your hair down and attracts dirt to it, making it look dingy.

Choosing the right shampoo for your hair type is also very important.  There are many brands that are specially meant for normal, dry and oily hair.  If your hair has been processed or colored, you will need to be even more selective because your hair will tend to be drier and more brittle than normal.  Use formulations that are specific for treated hair; not only will it be gentler, it will also make a perm or coloring job last much longer.

Do not skip conditioner, no matter how short your hair is.  Shampooing strips hair of its moisture, so conditioning is much needed to restore suppleness.  Conditioned hair is much more smooth and manageable.  Some tips when conditioning:  concentrate on the lower part of your hair rather than the roots, because these are the areas that will tend to be drier.  After allowing the conditioner to stay on hair for the recommended amount of time, be sure to rinse it thoroughly.  Hair experts say that using cold water to rinse out conditioned hair makes it very shiny, as opposed to using warm water.  Never rub hair with a rough towel when drying.  And avoid twisting it in a towel to get the water out.
