Today we will be discussing laser facial hair removal. This is becoming more and more popular as the technology has advanced and the prices are coming down. If you are considering laser facial hair removal it’s a good idea that you know a few things about it before you dive right into it.
First things first. Let me tell you how lasers actually remove hair. There are several types of lasers that are used for facial hair removal and we won’t get into that right now but they basically all do the same thing. Hair grows out of a tiny hole called a follicle. The follicle contains a substance in it called melanin. Melanin is the substance that is responsible for pigmentation in both hair and skin. When the laser light is applied to the skin, the follicle which is darker than the surrounding skin because it contains more melanin, absorbs heat from the laser, which in turn damages the hair follicle. This damage is what removes the hair and stunts the growth of future hair.
It’s important to note that laser facial hair removal isn’t permanent. What the laser actually does is remove the hair that is currently growing in the follicle and slow down any future regrowth of the hair from that follicle. Depending upon several factors, several treatments will likely be needed in order to get satisfactory results. People usually have between six and eight treatments and they are generally spaced between eight and 12 weeks apart.
The best candidates for laser facial hair removal are individuals who have light colored skin and dark, course hair. This is because light skin will not absorb the heat but the dark course hair will. Precautions should be taken if you have dark skin since it’s not uncommon for dark skinned individuals to receive burns on their face from laser facial hair removal. If you fall into this category, be sure and go to an experienced laser hair removal clinic and make sure they are very experienced in treating dark skinned individuals.
